Turkey will soon make decisions finalizing plans for a third nuclear power plant in the country, Energy Minister Taner Yildiz announced during an 8 October gathering in Izmir of the Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA), according to Today’s Zaman on 15 October. Faced with both increasing energy demand and higher costs for energy imports – particularly in the form of natural gas – Turkey is looking to nuclear energy to power the country’s future. Turkish nuclear energy experts have stated that the country plans to have three nuclear power facilities on line by 2023 that will ultimately provide 10% of the energy available.
Coal also figures as a main contributor to Turkey’s future energy mix. The government plans for coal to account for 30% of the country’s power generation by 2023, the republic’s centennial year. (CONTINUED - 1097 WORDS)
