Libya’s National Congress finally approved a broad-based government nominated by PM ‘Ali Zeidan on 31 October. New Oil Minister ‘Abd al-Bari al-‘Arusi is a former political prisoner from the Muslim Brotherhood.
In a repeat of Congress’ last attempt to vote on a government, proceedings were thrown into confusion on 30 October when protestors stormed the chamber. However, unlike last time – when the choices of previous Prime Minister designate Mustafa Abu Shagur were rejected, throwing the whole process into confusion (MEES, 5 October) – Mr Zeidan’s choices were ultimately accepted the following day (although with protests continuing the 31 October confirmation session was cut short).
