Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) has awarded a $500mn project management and consultancy (PMC) contract to Switzerland-based Foster Wheeler for its Clean Fuels Project at the Mina al-Ahmadi and Mina ‘Abd Allah refineries in Kuwait. KNPC Chairman and Managing Director Fahd al-‘Ajmi said: “The Clean Fuels Project is a critical mega-project that will shape the future of Kuwait’s refining capability while driving the highest standards of commitment to the environment.”
Foster Wheeler said it is a major upgrade and expansion of the two refineries to increase their combined throughput by 264,000 b/d to 800,000 b/d: “The objective is to increase conversion of fuel oil to higher value products in order to meet expected market demand and tighter specifications (1%) for the sulfur content of transportation fuels.” The contract includes project management during tendering of the main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts, and management of the EPC contractors through to the completion of performance testing.
