Kuwait may reconsider its subsidies policy in order to target those who are most in need, Kuwaiti Minister of Finance Shaikh Salim ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Sabah told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on 21 October, echoing earlier comments made on the sidelines of the World Bank-IMF meeting in Washington DC earlier this month.
Speaking to the state news agency on 21 October Shaikh Salim said that Kuwait no longer had any intention to withdraw these subsidies, insisting it would not take any action which could reduce the standard of living of Kuwaiti nationals in lower income brackets. In a separate earlier interview with Al Arabiya News, he explained the government was merely in discussions regarding a study to “evaluate and rationalize subsidies to the citizens,” and not to lift them.
