Saudi Arabia is likely to proceed with the further development of the Neutral Zone’s 300,000 b/d Khafji offshore oil and gas field without Kuwaiti participation after Kuwait withdrew from the project.
The latest development, relayed to MEES by a well-informed source, comes just after Khafji Joint Operations awarded UK-based firm Mott MacDonald a five-year engineering services consultancy contract for the field in April this year. The Khafji field – which produces all of the Neutral Zone’s offshore output of 300,000 b/d – is an extension of Saudi Arabia’s 1.5mn b/d Safaniyah field – the world’s largest offshore field (MEES, 10 May).
