China has agreed to build power plants in Yemen with a combined capacity of 5GW, during a state visit by Yemen’s President ‘Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi to Beijing. Returning to Sanaa on 19 November, President Hadi told state media that he had concluded agreements with Chinese President Xi Jinping for 5GW of generating capacity, to include gas and coal-fired units.

Yemen’s Minister of Electricity Salih Sumai announced on 17 November that agreements for a first group of plants with a combined capacity of 2GW had been signed by China and Yemen. These would include coal-fired plants at Belhaf and Ma’bar, each with 400MW capacity, and further coal-fired and diesel-fired capacity. (CONTINUED - 298 WORDS)
