At his first news conference in Tehran following his resounding victory in last week’s elections, Iran’s president-elect spoke of opportunity, transparency and mutual trust – words that would have done his image no harm in the eyes of both the 50.7% majority who voted for him, and those leaders abroad readying to welcome him into their ranks.
“The new government feels an opportunity has been created for constructive interaction with the world,” he told reporters on 17 June. “It has been created by the Iranian people participating in the election, and I think all countries should use this opportunity, as it will result in mutual interests,” he continued, adding: “there is a lot of tension in the region, and interaction with the next [Iranian] government will be beneficial for Iran, the region and the world.” (CONTINUED - 1917 WORDS)
