Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is touting the country’s first independent water and power producer (IWPP) project in five years and at the same time a new independent water producer (IWP) project. Unlike many MENA countries Qatar’s power generating capacity is not overstretched, but there is a need to build new desalination capacity to keep ahead of growing water consumption.
The proposed IWPP will have capacity to generate 2gw of electricity and desalinate 90-120mn gal/day of water, while the planned IWP will have 40-60mn gal/day capacity. Both plants are expected to be built near Ras Laffan. Kahramaa has invited expressions of interest for the two projects. The IWPP is expected to be tendered in 2014-15. (CONTINUED - 272 WORDS)
