Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has invited requests for qualification by 28 October for an independent water producer (IWP) project at Qurayyat, 54km southeast of Muscat. The greenfield desalination project will have a capacity of up to 46mn gal/day (209,000 cmd). The company said earlier this year that the Qurayyat IWP might be developed in two phases beginning in 2016.
Meanwhile, a consortium of Japan’s Sumitomo (45%), Malaysia’s Malakoff (45%) and Spain’s Cadagua (10%) announced on 16 September financial close for the 191,000 cmd Al-Ghubrah IWP, which received Muscat’s approval in December (MEES, 26 July).
