Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded an advisory services contract for its Hassyan independent power producer (IPP) project to London-headquartered consultancy Ernst & Young. The 1.2GW plant will be coal-fired, comprising two 600MW units due online in 2020 and 2021. Hassyan was originally conceived as a gas-fired project, but the government has changed its energy strategy to reduce reliance on gas (MEES, 23 August 2013).
DEWA Managing Director and CEO Sa’id Muhammad al-Tayir said on 9 February that the Hassyan advisory award “is a key step in the implementation of the energy diversification strategy adopted by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, in which clean coal based electricity generation is set to become part of Dubai’s energy portfolio.” (CONTINUED - 275 WORDS)
