Many in Iran believe that last year’s decision to engage with the west over the nuclear standoff emanated from the highest authority in the land – Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Deteriorating economic conditions made the sanctions-hit status-quo unsustainable, necessitating a shift to a new tack: Mr Khamenei backed the election of moderate reformer Hassan Rohani in June and the start of negotiations with the west five months later.
