Cairo is considering the possibility of not switching to daylight saving time this year, as it looks at various ways to help combat power cuts which plague Egypt during summer months, as power stations struggle to deal with rising demand.
Clocks were due to go forward one hour on 1 May but a cabinet decision has put that on hold for the time being until a national opinion poll is carried out. Last year, daylight savings time was reintroduced after a 3-year hiatus, during which the serving cabinet had decided it was no longer an effective way to combat high electricity demand.
