The UAE’s Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa), utility for the northern emirates, plans to build a 200MW solar plant. While a timescale has not been revealed, Fewa director-general Muhammad Salih says the plant will be developed as part of a program to add generating capacity and upgrade transmission and distribution grids by 2025.
Fewa’s total generation capacity is 703MW, at three plants which can burn either gas or diesel. The authority had 1.15GW of capacity in 2013, but has shut down ageing units. It has long been reliant on imports from Abu Dhabi to meet demand, but these increased to more than 2GW in 2014 at peak demand times. (CONTINUED - 308 WORDS)
