Saudi Arabia’s cabinet this week approved a plan to “start correction of the prices of some energy products gradually.” At the same meeting the cabinet also approved a so-called Citizen’s Account policy, aimed at reducing the impact of higher energy prices on low and medium income households.
The passing of potentially opposing policies at the same cabinet meeting reflects the Saudi government’s concern about introducing much-needed reform of subsidies without causing protests and dissent.
