Egypt has received three bids to build 6GW of coal-fired power capacity at Hamrawein on the Red Sea. Electricity minister Mohamed Shaker says the ministry will announce the winning consortium shortly.
The lowest bid of $4.4bn came from a consortium grouping China’s Shanghai Electric and Dongfang Electric with Egyptian firm Hassan Allam. US conglomerate GE and China’s Harbin Electric bid $5.2bn, while Japan’s Mitsubishi-Hitachi Power Systems and Toyota Tsusho with Egyptian partners Orascom Construction and Elsewedy Electric offered $6.19bn.
