Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity is increasingly pushing ‘game-changing’ projects as it seeks to meet growing power demand while in the longer term reducing pressure on overstretched gas resources. The latest addition to Egypt’s key projects list is a 6GW coal-fired plant, for which state generator EEHC has selected China’s Shanghai Electric and Dongfang Electric as preferred bidding consortium.
The decision to go ahead with the project in the Red Sea port of Hamrawein means that EEHC has almost 27GW of capacity in key projects at various stages of development. This is equivalent to 69% of the installed capacity claimed by EEHC in its latest annual report, for financial year 2015-16 (see table). Additions since mid-2016 are likely to have taken current installed capacity to 39-40GW. (CONTINUED - 982 WORDS)
