President Hassan Rohani on 25 July appointed Abdelnaser Hemmati as CBI governor to replace Mr Seif, as the country faces a renewal of US sanctions after Washington withdrew in May from the 2015 nuclear deal.
The dismissal of Mr Seif follows recent speculation that the country’s top economic team – including Finance Minister Masoud Karbasian and the head of the Management and Planning Organization Mohammad Baqer Nobakht – will be replaced for failing to arrest the fall in the value of the Iranian rial.
