Saudi Arabia’s total installed generating capacity has topped 90GW as a result of the start-up of a number of oil and gas fired plants in 2016-17 and early 2018. While almost 15GW of new plants under construction are mainly conventional oil and gas fired, the Ministry of Energy is increasingly pushing utility-scale wind and solar projects, and a nuclear power project (see table).
Capacity in steam turbine plants, which typically burn fuel oil and sometimes crude, amounts to almost 38GW or 41.4% of the total. Open cycle gas turbine capacity amounts to 36GW while combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) capacity is over 16GW, making normally gas-burning capacity the largest in terms of fuel with over 52GW or 57.6% of the total (see chart).
