Eastern-based General Khalifa Haftar’s tenuous hold over southern Libya was highlighted on 27 November by a Tripoli-aligned force’s attempt to seize the Eni-led 75,000 b/d El Feel oil field located in the country’s southern desert. Mr Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) briefly lost control of the field, before unleashing air strikes and sending in reinforcements to regain control.
This didn’t prevent Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) from halting production temporarily. “There have been air strikes at the gates of the El Feel oil field and inside a housing compound at the field used by NOC personnel,” NOC said in a statement.
