Cyprus’ state natural gas public company, Defa, on 4 June invited expressions of interest for the supply of LNG to the island. Although no quantities were mentioned in the announcement, MEES understands Defa will look to import enough to supply the local market, which is estimated at 100mn cfd.
Defa says it intends to “procure its LNG requirement through a combination of medium and long-term supply via one or more LNG sales and purchase agreements, and supplemental cargos via multiple Master Sales Agreements and a bidding process.” Any potential LNG imports would in theory be sent to an FSRU, to be moored at the port of Vasilikos, for which there is also an ongoing tender (MEES, 12 October 2018).
