Tunisia on 11 July launched its third small-scale solar PV bid round, which is aimed at developing six 10MW solar parks and ten 1MW plants. The previously awarded two rounds have yet to show any sign of progress, however.
The North African country is desperately trying to wean itself off a heavy (and costly) dependence on natural gas to fuel its power plants by pushing an ambitious renewables program (MEES, 14 June) . But it has failed to bring online a single new renewables plant since launching its 2016 ‘action plan’. A 10MW solar park in Tozeur that was scheduled to start-up last month is still not ready.
