Iranian officials at this week’s UN General Assembly in New York rebuffed repeated overtures from US officials for a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rohani. For now Iran is sticking to the line that the US must return to the 2015 nuclear deal (and in particular end the third-party sanctions since last November that have crippled its oil exports and threaten financial meltdown – MEES, 27 September) before it will consider the face-to-face meeting that Mr Trump evidently craves.
Mr Rohani told the UN general assembly on 25 September “They call us to negotiations while they run away from treaties and deals… Our response to any negotiations under sanctions is negative.” (CONTINUED - 1144 WORDS)
