Abu Dhabi’s state nuclear regulator FANR has licensed a second group of reactor operators to work at the four-reactor 5.6GW Barakah nuclear power plant, 50km west of Ruwais on the emirate’s Gulf coast.
The newly-certified 38 operators will take the number of licensed operators to 53, which FANR says is “well above the 32 required to operate Unit 1” at Barakah. The 1.4GW first unit at Barakah is mechanically complete, but the loading of fuel rods to allow operational testing and commissioning is awaiting FANR’s award of an operating licensing to Nawah, a joint venture of state nuclear firm Enec and Korean contractor Kepco formed to operate the reactors.
