The IEA expects over 20GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to be brought online in the Middle East and North Africa during 2020-25, led by the UAE and followed by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman. The agency estimates that Mena solar PV capacity reached 7.31GW by the end of 2019 and currently stands at 8.80GW, including off-grid installations.
However the IEA’s Renewables 2020, published on 10 November says that “two key uncertainties cloud the forecast for the Mena region.” First is the pace at which contractual agreements can be reached under the various procurement policies and second is the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
