Kuwait’s power sector generated a record 75.08TWh in 2019, easily surpassing the previous annual record of 74.11TWh set in 2018. Peak load too hit a new high, maxing out at 14.42GW in June (see chart 1 andMEES, 30 August 2019), although total electricity generation was higher the following month at 9.20TWh in July – also a monthly record.
Despite rising electricity demand, Kuwait retains ample spare capacity. Total generating capacity stands at 19.7GW, and rose incrementally in 2019 with the start-up of the 70MW Shagaya Renewables Energy Park.
