As the smoke clears following the catastrophic 4 August port of Beirut explosion (MEES, 7 August), Lebanon must now address the long path toward recovery – tackling questions both big and small. On the political front, anger against the country’s culpable political establishment is higher than ever and pressure for a political alternative is mounting (MEES, 14 August).
But equally important is addressing the sheer physical damage to downtown Beirut and the port facilities, and doing so in a manner that does not fall back into the same patterns of corruption and incompetence that directly led to the explosion. (CONTINUED - 911 WORDS)
