UAE state nuclear firm Enec announced on 19 August that the 1.4GW capacity Unit 1 of the four-reactor nuclear power plant under development at Barakah, 50km west of Ruwais on Abu Dhabi’s Gulf coast, has been successfully connected to the transmission grid.
With Unit 1 integrated and synchronized with the grid, the Nawah operating joint venture of Enec and Korean construction contractor Kepco will now raise the level of power delivery, overseen by state nuclear regulator FANR. Enec announced via Twitter on 19 August that the “energy levels will be gradually raised safely over the coming months,” which suggests that the Barakah 1 reactor will be fully operational by the end of the year.
