Abu Dhabi has recently begun importing crude oil to Ruwais according to trade flows from data intelligence firm Kpler. Since November, Adnoc has imported cargoes of 34° API Shabwah crude from Yemen and Nigeria’s 30° Forcados.
Adnoc has 837,000 b/d refining capacity at Ruwais – of which 557,000 b/d is for crude oil and 280,000 b/d condensate. The Ruwais crude distillation units (CDU) run entirely on Adnoc’s flagship 40° API Murban grade, and so in 2018 Adnoc awarded a $3.1bn contract for the long-planned Crude Flexibility Project (CFP) to enable the 420,000 b/d Ruwais West refinery to process its Upper Zakum crude, or imported barrels (MEES, 9 February 2018).
