As soon as Israel and the UAE agreed to normalize relations last August through the Abraham Accords, Abu Dhabi state renewables firm Masdar appeared well placed to pick up contracts (MEES, 21 August 2020). Those expectations are now becoming reality, with Masdar and EdF Renewables Israel this week agreeing to a strategic partnership to promote opportunities in the field of renewable energy in Israel during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The match appears well made. Firstly, Israel is targeting 30% of its energy mix to come from renewable energy by 2030. In 2019, renewable sources provided just 4.6% (2GW) of capacity (see chart).
