Saudi Arabia’s gas-for-power use hit new highs in 2020 both in absolute terms and as a share of total fuel consumption. This came despite overall electricity consumption rising from 2019’s multi-year lows.
Gas accounted for a record 57.3% of fuel used for electricity production (including for water desalination) in 2020 according to the latest statistics from the WERA regulatory body. With the electricity sector’s fuel consumption coming in at a total of 4,009 trillion BTU, this puts gas consumption at a record 2,295 trillion BTU (see chart 1). (CONTINUED - 955 WORDS)
