The man who was one of the most vocal in decrying management instability at the top of Algeria’s energy sector has been fired. After just eight months on the job, energy minister Abdelmadjid Attar was replaced in a partial cabinet reshuffle on 22 February by his predecessor Mohamed Arkab (MEES, 26 June 2020).
Under pressure over economic and political challenges, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune dissolved parliament on 22 February, opening the way for legislative elections within three months. He also changed a few faces in government. But Algerians, who have returned to the streets in their thousands demanding a complete revamping of the established political system, are unlikely to be placated (MEES, 19 February).
