Kuwait’s electricity demand hit an all time high 15.07GW on 6 June amid soaring early summer temperatures. Although Kuwait has nominal installed generation capacity of 20.3GW, in reality capacity is significantly lower at around 18GW, and the government is urging residents to reduce useage to ensure that the system is not overloaded.
Electricity demand has comfortably been running at record levels for every month over the first half of 2021, with peak demand frequently some 2GW above the same period in 2020 (see chart 1). The figure of 15.07GW for June to date – which may well be topped – is well ahead of June 2020’s 13.33GW, although it is only slightly more than last year’s highest figure of 14.96GW which was set in July.
