Israel has a new government following four elections over the past three years, none of which provided a coherent majority in the 120 seat Knesset. The new government is an inherently-unstable ‘anyone but Netanyahu’ alliance which lumps together ideologies from both the right and the left and includes the first ever Arab party to serve in a governing coalition (MEES, 4 June).
While the key message following the swearing-in on 13 June was one of unity and steady governance after a tumultuous three years, the main reason the parties were brought together was their disdain for outgoing PM Netanyahu who is currently on trial for corruption (MEES, 22 November 2019).
