Dubai’s ruler Mohammed bin Rashid this week inaugurated the 300MW first stage solar PV development of MBR Phase 5 which is being developed by the Shuaa Energy 3 JV which groups Dubai state firm Dewa (60%) with a consortium of Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power (24%) and regional developer Gulf Investment Corporation (16%). In total, Phase 5 will consist of 900MW upon completion.
The 300MW phase will bring Dubai’s solar generation capacity up to 1.31GW. Another 300MW is due online next month from the first stage of the 950MW MBR Phase 4. This will be comprised of 100MW through the “world’s tallest CSP tower,” and 200MW from the facility’s first parabolic trough (MEES, 18 June). Dubai’s solar capacity should exit the year at 1.61GW.
