Qatar is set for a third consecutive budget surplus in 2023 amid ongoing elevated global energy prices. On 19 December Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani approved the 2023 budget which projects a strong $8bn surplus. Indeed, given the conservative oil price assumption of $65/B there is a good chance that the emirate will exceed this.
The budget was approved just one day after the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. The match marked the culmination of an event for which Qatar had been preparing for more than a decade, having been awarded the rights to host the tournament in December 2010.
