Kuwait has been importing LNG since 2008 as domestic gas production has failed to keep up with power sector demand. Imports had always halted for January as the Golar Igloo floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) was sent for maintenance to Dubai. Until now.

The 22mn t/y permanent Al Zour LNG import terminal received its first cargo in July (MEES, 16 July 2021), enabling an immediate surge in imports. The facility has also enabled Kuwait to import LNG year-round, and figures from data intelligence firm Kpler show that for the first time Kuwait imported LNG in January.
