Another year, another Kuwait government has resigned. Barely three months after Kuwait’s latest government was formed, it has resigned. The development will come as no surprise to most observers, with few having expected the outgoing cabinet to have forged a working relationship with the current parliament which was elected in September (MEES, 21 October 2022).
Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al Sabah accepted the government’s resignation on 26 January following fierce disputes with MPs over state handouts. While fellow GCC states such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been wary of wasting last year’s oil revenue windfall on handouts to citizens, preferring instead to invest the proceeds into capital projects aimed at economic diversification, Kuwaiti MPs have shown no such restraint.
