Kenyan-led mediation efforts which appeared earlier this month to have secured a commitment to “an unconditional ceasefire” in Sudan’s bloody civil war have rapidly unraveled.
Despite being outgunned, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan appears to hold the unrealistic expectation that its rival, the notorious paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), will cede substantial territory as a precondition for talks.
