Egypt has cut its target for renewables’ 2040 share of power generation to 40% from 58%. Speaking in Alexandria on 20 October, oil minister Karim Badawi underlined a renewed focus on attracting more investment in gas-focused exploration. Gas output fell to a 7-year low 4.58bn cfd for August (MEES, 18 October). Cairo hopes that upcoming exploration drilling will discover the reserves to turn this around (MEES, 11 October), whilst Mr Badawi referenced Egypt’s hopes of attracting more investment via the ongoing bid round (MEES, 30 August). Mr Badawi’s new renewables target implies that the previous interim target of 42% by 2030 is also now defunct.
