French major TotalEnergies is to lead plans for 200,000 t/y of green ammonia production from 1GW of renewables in Morocco. CEO Patrick Pouyanné on 28 October signed a preliminary land use agreement for the ‘Chbika’ project as he visited the kingdom alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.

This envisages 1GW of new onshore solar and wind capacity near Morocco’s Atlantic coast in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region “producing green hydrogen from the electrolysis of desalinated seawater and its transformation into 200,000 t/y of green ammonia for the European market,” the French major says.
