Iran injected a record 858mn m3 (30.3bcf) of sales gas into its gas network on 19 December as cold temperatures drove unprecedented winter gas demand according to the National Iranian Gas Company. Iran typically limits gas supply to major industries and power plants in winter to prioritize heating demand, but the run-up to this winter saw power plants’ liquid fuel reserves at multi-year lows, further complicating the picture (MEES, 15 November). Authorities have imposed rolling power cuts amidst gas and fuel shortages, with lights switched off along highways in Tehran this week to save energy. Iranian gas supplies to neighboring Iraq have also been cut since late-November (MEES, 29 November).
