Abu Dhabi state offtaker Ewec has selected a joint venture of France’s EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power to develop the emirate’s 1.5GW Al Ajban solar PV plant. In a 14 February announcement, Korea Western Power (Kowepo) stated that construction will begin in June and is expected to be completed in July 2026.
Once fully operational, Al Ajban is expected to produce around 4.5TWh a year says Kowepo. That is nearly double the 2.4TWh generated by Abu Dhabi’s existing solar plants in 2022, according to the latest Ewec stats. Renewables accounted for 2.5% of total Ewec generation in 2022, dwarfed by the Barakah nuclear plant’s 20.6TWh (MEES, 17 February). Renewable generation will have increased slightly in 2023 following the inauguration of the 2GW Al Dhafra in November (MEES, 17 November 2023). (CONTINUED - 271 WORDS)
