Solar power plants generated a record 6.16TWh of electricity in Dubai last year according to state utility Dewa, equivalent to a record 10.98% of total generation. But coal-fired power generation at the Hassyan plant also edged up to 950GWh (1.69% of generation) according to the firm’s recently published Sustainability Report. Dewa says that modest volumes of coal, diesel and fuel oil are burned throughout the year for testing and commissioning activities. Gas also contributed a record 44.5TWh last year as overall generation increased by 6% year-on-year (MEES, 23 February), while a new Waste-To-Energy plant generated 174GWh.
