Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) is responsible for providing the UAE’s ‘northern emirates’ with electricity and desalinated water. It replaced the Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) in 2020, and serves the emirates of Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Umm al-Quwain and Ajman.
EtihadWE’s role has transformed over the past fifteen years as it has moved away from producing electricity to offtake from suppliers elsewhere in the UAE in order to reliably and efficiently meet rising demand. The firm operates two power plants in Ajman and Ras al-Khaimah with combined capacity of 587MW, but these have been out of service since 2021, with the Ajman plant decommissioned last year. In 2010, the group generated 3,401GWh of electricity which was equivalent to around 50% of consumption, but this slumped to just 399GWh in 2014 before eventually ceasing during 2021 (see chart 1).
