Cairo on 6 July hosted formal reconciliation talks for Sudan’s rival political factions, the first since fighting erupted in Khartoum 15 months ago between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) (MEES, 28 April 2023).

The current conflict evolved from a power struggle four years ago, when the SAF and the RSF jointly ousted longtime President Omar al-Bashir following peaceful popular protests (MEES, 12 April 2019), only to oust civilian Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok 18 months later. (CONTINUED - 2087 WORDS)
