Iraq is on track to cut gas flaring to a record low this year with officials claiming that the country now captures about 65% of its gross gas output. Izzat Sabir, Iraq’s Deputy Oil Minister for Gas Affairs, says 2.17bn cfd of 3.36bn cfd wellhead output is now captured, with 1.19bn cfd flared – a record low 35% share and a 12-year low in absolute terms (see chart).

Iraq has cut gas flaring to 35% from over 50% just two years earlier. But, though gas capture has topped 2bn cfd for the first time, this remains insufficient to provide the country with stable power supply. Further gains are expected from the addition of NGL processing capacity and at-field treatment facilities in the run up to the end-2027 start-up of Total’s giant GGIP hub.
