Iraq’s Midlands Oil on 1 August inaugurated a 15mn cfd gas compression station at its 8,000 b/d East Baghdad-North field which Oil Minister Hayan Abdulghani says will provide feedstock for 100MW of electricity. Inoperable since 1986, the station was rehabilitated by Midlands and will capture around 14mn cfd which was previously flared. A further boost is set to come from under-construction gas capture facilities at the field’s other flank, 37,000 b/d East Baghdad-South operated by Chinese firm Zhenhua Oil (MEES, 19 July). Iraq continues to suffer from acute gas shortages due to routine flaring but capture has significantly improved to around 65% of gross output (MEES, 12 July).
