Yemen’s Houthis returned to their Red Sea campaign in August after a near-two-week pause in dramatic style, forcing the abandonment of a third merchant vessel off their shores (the first since June) with devastating effect.
In the early morning of 21 August, two boats carrying Houthi forces approached the Sounion crude oil tanker 140km west of Hodeidah. Three projectiles struck the vessel knocking out its engine and forcing the crew to evacuate the burning ship.
