There were no surprises in Algeria’s 8 September presidential election with incumbent Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared the winner with just shy of 95% of the vote, albeit on a turnout of less than 25%.

Whilst Tebboune, who has the backing of the country’s powerful military, was sure to win, even he was embarrassed by the speed of the announcement of his landslide victory, including an initial turnout figure which turned out to be far in excess of the real number. (CONTINUED - 129 WORDS)
