Cairo on 9 September announced a hike to electricity prices for both households and commercial users with new prices set to be calculated from the start of August but appearing on September billing.

Coming 13 months after the previous price rises, the latest hikes are roughly in line with inflation which was 26.2% over the year to August. The average household sees a 17% price hike, rising to 35% for the heaviest users, whilst commercial users see more substantial increases of up to 47%, though 30% is more typical (see table).
